PHILANTHROPY

Throughout the years, we have tried to find key opportunities to have a positive impact on our community.  Below is a letter from a family we connected with and we are proud to be part of something that is meaningful.

Dear Colin and Erin -

By the Fall of 2017, Lee( USMC- Vietnam era) knew his time was limited. The effects of Agent Orange, along with other complications, had taken a toll on his body and he required oxygen 24/7.

To make it easier and safer for Lee, we moved into a new, single-level condo. With everything brand new and fresh, Lee was adamantly against getting a pet initially. But suddenly one day, Lee decided we needed a dog “for companionship"- and his need was urgent. As a true dog person who missed having one around, I was more than happy to comply.

Through the magic of the internet, we were ultimately lead to a wonderful kennel practically in our own backyard. And through a series of small miracles and God's divine intervention, Titus came into our lives and home. He naturally took to Lee and was most often found either on Lee's lap or curled on his feet. Our hope was that Titus would eventually become a service/ companion dog for Lee. Training began almost immediately for this beautiful, playful 9-week old pup.

Sadly, Lee passed away just 6 weeks later.  But Titus was already learning quickly and it was my desire to continue his training. SinceTitus brought me so much joy and comfort, we began focusing on therapy training that would enable us to share those traits. With much help and encouragement from Colin and Erin, this has become a reality.

Titus passed his certification exam with flying colors just a week after his first birthday. He now routinely visits several nursing homes as well as makes “guest" appearances at local groups and functions upon request. He is still “all boy" but you can count on him to put a smile on the face of just about everyone he meets.

But therapy work, although very important to me, wasn't the only interest I had when it came to dogs. My ultimate dream was to give back to those who sacrifice so much for us and our beautiful country-our USA veterans and their families! My idea was to someday provide a therapy dog that would bring not only joy but comfort and emotional support to a veteran or family. Sharing that dream with Erin and Colin resulted in the development of this wonderful program dedicated to the memory of my husband, Lee. Thanks to Erin, Colin and Berkley Creek labs, my dream has come true!

God Bless!

D. Martell
